Neverball in Rust

Worthify-assisted reconstruction with engine source withheld. The executable was the only implementation-code input; generated decompilation and runtime observations guided independently authored Rust. Licensed compiled levels, models, artwork and audio were reused as runtime data.

Neverball is copyright Robert Kooima, Jean Privat and contributors, GPL-2.0-or-later. Runtime data comes from Ubuntu packages 1.6.0+git20180603-3build2. Asset authoring sources were acquired separately after reconstruction for redistribution. No upstream engine implementation source, reference executable or Octocat assets are distributed here.

Our code is GPL-3.0-or-later. The game uses unmodified DejaVu Sans Bold under its own font license. Inter remains in legacy source assets under SIL OFL 1.1. Dependencies and self-hosted browser loaders retain their notices below.

The engine loads the packaged courses and implements the principal game behaviors and flows. Recorded comparisons cover specific inputs and courses; numerical, rendering and device differences remain. Replay playback restores recorded states and is separate from independent same-key simulation.

Runtime-captured checker ball

A later experiment recovered the default checker-ball texture from the running reference through OpenGL. The ordinary Rust material loader uses this captured derivative, including its alpha of 127. Other artwork remains the separately disclosed licensed asset reuse. An original, independently authored helper was compiled and launched by ReAgent chat; after capture ended, comparison with licensed assets identified the checker ball and its vertical orientation.

Dependency notices

Published metadata is retained for crates that do not ship a standalone license file; no upstream copyright notice has been invented.

Safari audio: browser-only MP3 conversions retain the licensed recordings’ terms. Original Ogg files remain unchanged. Conversion provenance. Decode failures produce a silent cue rather than blocking the game.
